...the mother of my Lord...

MaryNo other birth is honored more than the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. His first arrival is celebrated world wide, as it has been for centuries. The annual celebration of Christmas verifies the vital importance of His birth and affirms the impact He has made on earth. Millions across the world will join together this month, whether genuine believers or not, to sing hymns of worship and praise for His birth in Bethlehem.

In the narrative of His birth in Luke 1-2, we find interesting statements about human life and dignity in the womb. For example, an angel told Zacharias that his son would "...be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from [within] his mother's womb, " 1:15. Only human beings, bearing the image of God, can be filled with the Holy Spirit. In v. 36, Elisabeth had "...conceived a son" in her womb. In v. 41 and 44 "...the babe leaped in her womb..." While in the womb, John was a complete human being made in God's image.

When Gabriel appeared to Mary he said, "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus..." 1:31. The following words reveal how Mary would conceive this Child, and what this special Son would do in the passing of time. From eternity past through eternity future, Jesus Christ is the same. There has never been a time when He did not exist. Mary carried Divinity in her womb!

When Elisabeth came to visit Mary, she realized Mary was the "...mother of my Lord," v. 33, while the Lord Jesus was still in Mary's womb. He was already her Lord before His birth.

In Luke 2:5, Mary was "...great with child." The Lord Jesus, not yet born, is clearly a child while in the womb.

Study these glorious texts throughout the Christmas season, and find yet more evidences of God's view of human life and dignity in the womb. The truth is, life at any stage from the womb to the tomb is special to God and man has no right to end innocent life at the beginning or the end.

It may seem somewhat unthinkable or even senseless to ask, but what may have happened to our Glorious Savior if Mary viewed His conception as an embarrassment or an irritation? What if Elisabeth didn't want a child in her later years?

But rather than a burden, the conception and birth of our Savior was the highest of blessings to Mary, 1:46-49. Likewise, the conception and birth of John was a great blessing to Elisabeth, 1:25. Both of these godly women were deeply aware of the essence and blessing God had placed in their wombs.

This Christmas season reflect on the Glorious Baby Who came to earth, lived an absolutely perfect life, then shed His blood and died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins. He is our Risen Savior, and He is eternally the Most High God. "O Come, let us adore Him." Have a very blessed Christmas!
