September Devotional

Grandparent's Day

Grandmother and BabyWhen I was asked to do the devotional for September and told Grandparent's Day was this month, my mind instantly went to my grandparents. To give you just a little background on my grandparents, they were missionaries in Brazil for many years. When they came back to the States my grandpa pastored some churches, then he was head of the missions department at a Bible college. They were faithful serving God until He called them home. They left a wonderful Godly heritage for their children and grandchildren to follow.

In Paul's letter to Timothy, Paul compliments Timothy's mother and grandmother who stood firm in their faith and raised Timothy to serve God (2 Tim. 1:5). While thinking of other grandparents in the Bible I thought of Abraham and his great testimony of faith in God. If he had not been willing to obey God and trust Him in all things, then Isaac would not have been able to witness true faith and he might not have been the father and eventually grandfather that he was. This line goes down through the generations as person after person trusted God due to one man's faith and obedience.

Maybe today you are reading this and thinking that you are not setting the stage that you should be for the generations that are to follow. It's never too late! The first step to being the parent, grandparent or maybe even spouse or child that you are supposed to be is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23 tells us that we are all sinners: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." We cannot just attempt on our own to be good people because we're all sinners, but God had a plan. Romans 5:8 tells us: "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 10:9 says: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." With the first step taken care of, you can now, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths" - Proverbs 3:5,6. If we're trusting God and following Him, He will show us the things we are to do in and with our lives.

I know without a doubt that I will see my grandparents in heaven again because I have asked God to take away all my sins, trusting in Him ALONE to save me. If you do not know for sure if you will go to heaven when you die, it's not too late. Maybe you are saved, but you are not following God like you should. Just remember, there are people watching you, do you want to set a Godly heritage for others to follow?
