August 2010 Devotional

Faith and Freedom - Part 1

Because of the length of this devotion, it is divided into two sections. Part 2 will be our September 2010 devotional.

LibertyPsalm 33:12 affirms, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

Among “Christian conservatives” you often hear the term “faith and freedom.” There are various organizations, coalitions and institutions that use the term, and it is growing in popularity. It seems Americans that cherish our Christian heritage and the freedom it provides realize we may lose it all to a secular and socialistic ideology that is foreign to the traditional American way. No longer can we remain silent and apathetic, simply hoping the destructive changes will not effect us personally or alter our nation permanently.

We can no longer disregard the charge of our forefathers, who secured our freedom and gave future generations the responsibility to protect it. When it comes to resisting tyranny, we are directed “… to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”

Our leftist opponents label this as “extremism.” However, the quote is directly from the Declaration of Independence, the document that gave birth to America, the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” Furthermore, our nation was founded by the “extremists” of their day.” How else would you describe patriots “Who more than self their country loved - And mercy more than life?” These men stood against the monarchy of their homeland, and stood against tyranny for the cause of liberty, realizing the sacrifices involved. When the Declaration of Independence had been signed, it is said a great silence fell across the room. Each man knew that he had signed his death warrant. Yet in their “extremism,” they were willing to die for the cause - the love of liberty and the patriotic devotion that fashioned America.

We need some Christian, patriotic extremism back in our homes, our churches, the halls of government and halls of education. We must go back to our roots of faith and freedom. But if we desire America’s freedom, we must be committed to America’s faith. Faith and freedom are inseparable companions.

USAAmerica was birthed in liberty, and we are thankful for the laws established and means employed by which we have enjoyed God’s richest of blessings. Americans love rights and freedoms! But many are ignorant of an important fact – America’s freedom is the result of America’s faith. A primary reason we are in the process of losing freedom is because we have abandoned our Christian heritage. Secularism has replaced Christianity; we have moved from the righteous, unchanging Laws of God to the depraved and selfish whims of man.

Our nation was founded on Common Law, “that the American colonies had adopted from England … The Word of God was the basis for what was right and wrong under common law …” . But in our current, secular culture, God’s Law is no longer tolerated, let alone applied. It has been replaced with “statutory law,” defined as “a man-made law based on what 51 % think is best at any moment.” In this process, there is no absolute standard of right and wrong, good or bad. The consequences of this ideological change are clearly evident in the decadent behavior, morals, ethics and attitudes in American culture.

For decades, Americans have tolerated these secular changes and therefore the “leftist” masses have judicially dethroned God and are eliminating His standards of Law and justice. Now we are overwhelmed in a culture war, with freedoms and rights removed and multitudes bent on the most debased behavior and increasingly decadent worldviews. Our founding fathers were well aware that without the Christian faith, there would be no true, lasting freedom.

Our founders were men of faith that knew God would honor obedience to His Word. Obedience to God always results in the overall good and protection of the rights and privileges of any society committed to them. Simply read copies of their quotes and letters, and see the numerous references to the Christian faith. Psalm 33:12 challenges us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.”

Our founding fathers knew the Ten Commandments (Exo. 20:1-17) would provide the solid and lasting foundation of our laws, providing a consistent, impartial and perpetual standard of right and wrong. Among hundreds available, contemplate two comments from our earlier patriots:
• John Adams, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
• James Madison, “Religion [is] the basis and Foundation of Government.”
