Prisoner“If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?” Proverbs 24:11-12

These verses are very relevant to the times in which we live. They apply to abortion and euthanasia as well as to health care rationing for the aged, the severely handicapped, and those whose quality of life is not deemed to be worthwhile (by some people). At the time that these verses were written by the inspiration of God, about 950 B.C., the principles may have applied to those people whom had been accused of crimes punishable by death. If falsely accused, anyone who knew evidence that would deliver the accused from the death penalty was responsible to make the truth known. This principle is still applicable.

"We knew it not" is an excuse based upon ignorance of the problem. Is it willful ignorance? God knows our every thought. Abortion is something that we would rather not think about. We would rather not be shown the bloody facts. It is hard to comprehend 53 million babies destroyed by abortion since 1973. The victims are not just the babies, but also the girls and women who were forced to have an abortion by parents, boyfriends, husbands, or others.

How can we not care about this problem? What can we do about it? We can pray, but we can do more. We can vote for pro-life legislators. We can make phone calls and write letters. We can sign petitions. But we can also become involved in the nearest Baptists for Life Crisis Pregnancy Center by supporting it with a monthly financial gift, by volunteering to be a counselor, a receptionist, or a helper. We can become a member of Baptists for Life of Wisconsin. I can't imagine why anyone who cares about these issues wouldn't be able to give a dollar a day to make a difference. How much do we spend selfishly on ourselves?

Does our involvement really make a difference? What we do seems so small and insignificant. Through our Baptists for Life Women's Centers babies who were going to be aborted have been spared and given life. Girls and women who were going to kill their unborn child have been saved through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. They have been born again. They have changed their minds about destroying an individual's life. Some have continued with Bible studies through the Learn and Earn program. Some have started attending one of our fundamental Baptist churches. You have been a part of this through your prayers, your giving, and your volunteering. There are eternal results!

The word, "forbear," means to hold back or refuse. Don't do that. Be a part. Get involved. Some wonderful truths are found in these verses. Three acts of God are described. He ponders our hearts. He keeps our souls. He rewards our works. God considers the motivations of our hearts. He sees what human beings cannot see. We may be misjudged by other people because they don't know the motives in our hearts, but God knows us like nobody else does. God keeps our souls. We "are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation...." (I Peter 1:5)

God "is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy." (Jude 24) Nothing can pluck us out of Jesus hand, nor out of the Father's hand. (John 10:28-29) We are doubly secure in those hands! God will reward our works. We are not saved by our works (Titus 3:5), but we Christians are to "be careful to maintain good works" (Titus 3:8) "for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful." (Titus 3:14). No one may see or know what your good works are, but God sees and knows them and will reward you in eternity.

May your reward be great.
